Adam, from the English Federation of Disability Sport came to give us an evening of sports training, kindly sponsored by Sainsburys.
We started by writing down what we hoped to get out of the evening.
After that Adam talked a little about the different ways that Disability Sport can be organised
with a test, involving matching captions to descriptions to see if we had been paying attention. Then it was time to get more active !
We played a game where we moved around the hall, going through, or touching, as many rings as we could.
We did several variants of this – here is one.
We also played a game where we divided into two teams. One was trying to get all the bean bags to match the colours of the hoops they were in, and the other team was trying to make sure the colours did not match. Some of the hoops were on chairs to be reachable from a wheelchair.
We played some variations on games of hockey, where the room was divided into areas, and players from each team were assigned an area they played in.
Above is one of the games in action. Green sticks are playing towards one goal, and yellow sticks towards the other.
One useful thing we learnt was to think about flexible ways the space and rules can be used. Here is a diagram of an alternative way of dividing up a playing area, with channels down the sides with players in them.
By the end of the evening we were feeling “Happy and tired”

Wesley Memorial Church Garden Party in aid of Phab
After some rather mixed weather over the past month the sun shone on the Wesley Memorial Church annual garden party, with proceeds donated to Oxford Phab.
Members of the church, and of Oxford Phab swum and played games, and ate delicious cakes and scones, and drank many cups of tea and coffee. A beautiful summer day, and we are very grateful to our hosts, and to those who baked cakes, and helped with serving.
Tom's Quiz
As well as a normal club night Tom had prepared a quiz. There was a Wordsearch, for everyone to do individually.
Then we divided up into teams, one on the south side of the room and two on the north.
There was a picture themed section on identifying television programmes,
The programmes were from a range of eras, and covered a range of interests.
There was also a general knowledge quiz, and a musical section where we were asked to identify films or television programmes from their theme tunes.
We enjoyed the evening, and many thanks to Tom for the work he put in to prepare the quiz.
Evening Activities at Hinksey Heights Golf Club
We had an exciting evening of Footgolf at Hinksey Heights Golf Club, enjoying the fantastic view over Oxford and having a tasty meal. We are very grateful to the staff for looking after us so well.
Heading for the Footgolf
The view from the course is amazing, as you can see below:
We make up our own bonus activities !
Here we are out on the course !
and here is our PeerTube playlist for the event
Hinksey Heights Captains Drive In
We are the Hinksey Heights Golf Club Captains Charity for 2016 and they are donating the proceeds of the raffle to us, as well as other ingenious fund raising ideas.
Raffle
Their members have donated some very generous prizes.
A wide selection of raffle prizes – many, unsurprisingly, with a golfing theme.
Although not everyone could make it to the event, we were very pleased to have the support of those who did manage to get there.
Exploring
When the initial rush of raffle ticket sales had died down – since most of the golf club members were out playing their round of golf – we went for a walk to explore the course.
The view of Oxford is amazing.
Footgolf
One of their activities is Foot Golf, which is like a combination of Football and Golf, though we invented our own variant – by seeing how many throws were needed to go from the tee box to the hole.
The weather was a little chilly, but sunny, a good day to be out of doors.
Here is the ball heading for the hole !
It is trickier than it looks !
Simon teeing off in our hand thrown variant on FootGolf – note also the amazing view of Oxford in the background.
Simon makes it look easy !
Easter Bingo
We play for chocolates ! Members bring some eggs, or chocolate bunnies or other treats and we redistribute them through the evening.
Our caller, with our fancy Bingo machine.
Two full cards – once we have played a few games we tend to carry on until everyone has won a prize.
Happy winners with plenty of chocolate to take home !
Quiz Night
Robin had created a very well organised quiz, which we did in teams – as well as drinking tea or coffee and eating biscuits.
We had a Disney Princess based word search, as well as anagrams, and a chance to show our knowledge (or lack of), of the titles of Carry On films.
One of the other teams hard at work !
Church Partnership Party
Phab were invited to the church party which was held in Cowley Road Methodist Church.
Which People do we recognise ?
There were quizzes on Flags, People, and Streets of Oxford, as well as games for all ages
After the quizzes we had a plentiful supper, some singing and then a barn dance, before it was time to go home. A huge thank you to the congregation of Cowley Road Methodist Church for making us so welcome.
Lord Mayor's challenge
The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Rae Humberestone, visited Oxford Phab to meet the members (several of whom he knew already) and take part in a quiz, with a baked potato supper and a game of Boccia.
We were joined by visitors from Wesley Memorial Church, in particular from the Open Doors project and the John Wesley Society, which made it a particularly enjoyable evening.
The arrival
Mary and Helen welcoming the Lord Mayor.
The Mayor greeting members.
The quiz
Helen had prepared a quiz, so we divided up into four teams,
The Mayor’s team – called The Chain Gang – working on the quiz
Some of the other teams, hard at work.
Helen reading out the questions.
The supper
After the quiz we ate a meal of jacket potatoes with savoury mince, tuna, cheese or baked beans, followed by tea or coffee.
Boccia in the Church
We moved through into the church, where there was more space for a game of Boccia.
Trisha enjoying Boccia in the church
The Mayor bowled well, but his team did not quite catch up with the lead the General Ignorance team had built up in the quiz.
Presenting the prizes
At the end of the evening the Lord Mayor presented The Lord Mayor’s Challenge Cup to some members of the winning team. There were also chocolates which were shared with anyone who wanted one.
We hope Rae will be able to return next year, as Deputy Mayor for another Lord Mayor’s Challenge
Quiz night
We had a quiz using Simon’s laptop and the projector we bought for the club when he won the Paul Hope Award.
Here he is setting up.
We split into teams.
and BOTH teams ended up as (virtual) millionaires!
